Hi, there! My name is Ian and due to the nature of my work, I have a lot of travelling in the North-east of England, the border region of Scotland and occasionally Edinburgh . I also visit the Penrith area of Cumbria and the Vale of York, though less than the former areas. Now, we all know that the whole World has had a good thing with the oil that we've used so far, but just as the 1970's we seem to be having a bit of a panic with the price of fuel. I believe this is due to many factors one being the emerging nations whose economy is growing rapidly, just as ours did. When I was at school my economics lessons taught me that, in the market situation, if there is rising demand with same or lower supply, then the price needed to rise. Then we shouldn't be grumbling at present day prices! I am one of those who grumbles, as fuel is a big cost for me and hence lowers my income. I have less to spend on the luxuries of life and this is the western way I am used to. However, the rises have been productive as we are now cutting back and actually trying to save fuel. (Is this not reminiscent of the 1970's?). I, like many others in this country, drive to work in a 5-seater car BY MYSELF! What a waste of resources! But the public transport system is so said to be sub-standard. I would rather like to think that we have all become used to our cars, which in the past were little luxuries, so much that we almost believe them to be necessities. We need a radical assessment of our transport system which one man cannot do alone. But perhaps I can do my bit. Car sharing seems fairly prevalent in populated areas, not so much in rural/less populated such as the area I drive in. But I would like to use that spare space in my car when I am out and about. I use diesel in my car which gives me a rough return of 50 miles to the gallon, (has anyone worked out their miles to the litre yet?). What I am proposing is an idea to share the travel , at least with others, or to carry some non-precious articles. Cost may or may not come into the scheme depending on it's popularity. But a big advantage I have nowadays, as opposed to the 1970's, is that I have the web to let people know when and where I would be. In other words a copy of my diary would be put on this site for others to read so we could possibly come to an arrangement. I need your feedback on this idea so could you please return any comments?
Yours, Ian.
